Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
